Earlier today I installed the customizing Google firefox extension. It rips out all the adverts in gmail etc and forces https connections. So far so good and it hasn’t had a noticeable impact on the load times of web pages.
I used greasemonkey for a while and noticed the impact on browsing as a result so that got removed sharpish.
There’s a bunch of other options inside the extension so give it a try.
